Panchakarma softens our tissues, so the toxins can liquefy, and flow back into the digestive tract from where they are purged. Panchakarma treatments packages are divided in to three stages.
- Purva karma ( Pre-operative procedure)
- Pradhan karma (Main procedure)
- Paschat karma (Post-operative care).
(A) Purvakarmas (Pre-operative procedures)
Purva karma treatments are to be performed before starting the Panchakarma treatments. These treatments are directed to preparing patient mentally and physically for the main procedure. It includes three procedures.- Pachan karma
- Snehan karma
- Swedan karma
(B) Pradhan karma (Main procedure)
It includes all the panchakarma procedures. It is most essential step in curing the patients from the disease.These are:
Vaman
Vaman is one treatment among panchakarma for kapha predominating disorders. After proper preparation of the individual through poorvakarmas for about 4 to 5 days, this includes intake of medicine, body massages, steam baths, special diet etc. Prior to this procedure the individual’s body is prepared by massage and steam baths. This therapeutic induced vomiting is done by giving emetic drugs orally along with a large quantity of medicinal liquids. The subject is allowed to vomit all the contents of the stomach. This treatment is very good for treating bronchial asthma, cough, psoriasis, epilepsy, and insanity etc.
Virechan
Virechan is one treatment among panchakarma for pita predominating disorders. After proper preparation of the individual through poorvakarmas for about 4 to 5 days, this includes intake of medicine, body massages, steam baths, special diet etc. Virechan is done by oral administration of purgative drugs. This treatment is very good for treating skin diseases, urinary disorders, fistula, flatulence, insanity, arthritis, dermatitis, chronic fever, Jaundice etc.
Snehavasti
Vasti is one treatment among Panchakarma for vata predominating disorders. Prior to this procedure the individual’s body is prepared by massage especially for the stomach and back. This medicated oil enema is the main therapy for constipation, neurological ailments, paralysis, flatulence, lower backache, gout, rheumatism etc. The treatment nourishes and rebuilds the body tissues (Dhatus), strengthens their activities, restores and fortifies the body's immunity. This promotes better nutrition while removing accumulated toxins (Malas) from the colon.
Kashayavasti
This treatment is normally done after a course of Snehavasti. This is a cleansing enema where combinations of honey, oil, herbal paste, and herbal decoction are administered as per the patient's requirement and condition. This treatment is very good for treating arthritis, constipation, neurological ailments, paralysis, flatulence, lower backache, gout, rheumatism, sciatica, fistula, hemiplegia etc.
Nasya
A therapeutic treatment for the nose, throat, sinuses and head. The face, shoulders and chest are massaged with specific herbal oil and made to perspire. The herbal extracts/herbal oil in exact doze is measured and poured slowly into the nostrils, while inhaling. After this process, the area around the nose, chest, palms and foot are massaged vigorously. This treatment will cleanse and strengthen the nasal passages, allowing breathing fully and easily. This treatment is very good for treating headache, bronchial asthma, sinusitis, allergies, migraine, facial paralysis, neuralgia, earache, dark circle around the eyes etc.
Raktamoksha
This is mainly used in the diseases resulting from blood derangement in the body. It is done with horns, leeches or suction cups. This treatment is very good for treating eczema, scabies, leukaemia, gout and in cases of stagnant blood causing local inflammation etc.
(C) Paschat karma (Post-operative care)
Post-operative care is one in which certain precautions are to be taken to get the full benefit of the main procedure. It also includes certain rejuvenating treatments, lifestyle management, diet management, intake of herbal supplements etc.These includes following procedures.
- Sansarjan karma
- Rasayan adi prayogam
- Shaman chikitsa
